The sound of the project is best described as downtempo ambient electronics mixed with ethnic world musics in the vein of "Karma" era Delerium, Amethystium, and Dead Can Dance. Its really a very intoxicatingly beautiful creation and I highly recommend it to anyone into ambient music styles.
While releases are of interest to me I as a promoter am interested in hearing about the experiences of putting on downtempo events, festivals etc. The Big Chill in the UK has been an inspiring notion to me though I have never been. Here in BC we've had in the past X-mas parties by Team Lounge which were all downtempo and loungy, there's been the Green Samurai Clan Dionysus festivals (RIP), and I've done a thing called Temple ov Intention in conjunction with the Intention winter retreat and summer camp that is all downtempo/ambient.

For me throwing a downtempo event is a potentially risky thing to do considering audiences may enjoy lounging to downtempo but dancing to it may be considered alternative to the regular sounds although with the advent of dubstep and dub flavors there is a certainly growing market for slower dance music.

OTT Live (Twisted Records, UK)
For the last 20 years Ott has been producing, arranging and recording with some of the most well known artists including Sinead O'Connor, The Orb, and Brian Eno. He has also worked with Simon Posford editing the Shpongle albums. After hearing his studio skills Simon commissioned him to co-create the landmark remix lp ‘Hallucinogen in Dub’.
Ott is a master of psychedelic sonic sorcery. His sound focuses on the down-tempo side as heard on his albums 'Blumenkraft' and ‘Skylon’ but he has been known to stray beautifully into different genres whilst maintaining the laid back vibe that we know and love…Come enjoy a night of modern electro-acoustic dubs with generous spatterings of indigenous sounds from around the world…

I've been dreaming of the ultimate chill party for many years and I am finally in a position to bring that dream (or a version of it) to life. Of course I can't do this all alone, so I've enlisted the help of Hendrik/Jaluka (the generous ringmaster of the Church of Bass) and recent Seattle transplant Adrian/Eckoe. Their excitement and passion for a similar dream gives me hope that this pipedream has actual validity beyond my skull. Together, we are shaping one tiny section of the universe into our version of chillout bliss. It's incredibly exciting to be working on a project that has lived in my head for so long and I can't wait to share it with you and the other chill-o-philes that I have yet to meet. This vision includes a comfortable environment, filled with pristine sound, soothing lights, amazing art and a soundtrack provided by the world's top ambient producers and DJs.

Welcome to Chillography101.

Join us on Friday, June 13 for the birth of a new type of event. Celebrate chillout the way it was meant to be enjoyed - comfortably lounging in a bubble of pristine audio, with a small group of fellow chill aficionados. We're taking the chill room and putting it in it's proper place - front and center.

To keep this event comfortable and intimate, only 100 tickets will be made available. Tickets are presale only and will not be available at the door. No ticket, no entry. Music runs 9:20pm to 6:30am, so arrive early and be prepared to sink in for the whole night and melt away to the finest chillout the Northwest has to offer. The doors will close at 1am and it will be exit only after that, so please plan on an early arrival. This guided voyage through time and (inner)space waits for no one.

For your comfort and nourishment, light snacks, chai, juice and fruit will be provided.

NOTE: This is an alcohol free event, but no-one under 18 years old will be admitted.

Buy your tickets here: http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/35112

The evening's Chillographers include LIVE performances by:

Phutureprimitive
The Phutureprimitive sound is subterranean electronic tribalism, combining elements of organic downtempo, ethnic breaks, and sensual atmospherics. Ethereal vocals soar over dubbed-out basslines, and live percussion unfolds over odd time signatures creating a groove that is influenced by the synthetic textures of psychedelic trance as well as the kinetic grooves of world music. Following his debut album, "Sub Conscious", released on Waveform Records in 2004, Phutureprimitive has since become a top artist in the Downtempo/Psy-chill/Phuture-dub/Ethnic Breaks music scene, performing at festivals and parties in cities and countries throughout the United States and Europe including New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, England, Scotland, Portugal, Holland, Italy and Croatia.

Gel-Sol ("IZ" CD release party)
Seattle's Gel-Sol is producer/musician Andrew Reichel, whose dichotomous sound spans from ambient soundscapes to complex, rhythmic electronica, creating a dynamic psychedelic universe with heavy emphasis on improvisation. In 2004, Gel-Sol released the critically-acclaimed Gel-Sol 1104 (aka Music Made For You...And By You, I Mean Me.) on the UK's cult ambient label Em:t Records. His follow-up album, Unifactor, continued the tradition of his unique, amorphous sound collages. A joint release between Psychonavigation and Canadian label Upstairs Recordings, his new album entitled "IZ," in his own words "Is an all-ambient adventure I wrote for my niece Izabella, who was born early last year." The album's music showcases Gel-sol's trademark melodic edge combined with sweeping synth pads reminiscent of '90s ambient albums from the likes of Pete Namlook and Global Communication.
EQlateral
Before joining together, each of them had made a name for themselves performing and recording as solo artists and with other groups. While Sebastian made young girls (and boys) weep with his mix of heartbreakingly beautiful and totally head-banger violin work in bands in Europe and the U.S., John was ripping up stages up and down the west coast with his totally cosmic cello playing – let's just say he was doing experimental soundings and the whole looping thing long before Zoe Keating or Loop Station. In the meantime, Peter was entertaining crowds at art festivals both state-side and around the world with his stellar bass playing and penchant for weird noise, outrageous costumes and whimsical theatrics. Susan was all over the place: getting international airplay as the singer for a gothic-electronic band and as a featured vocalist on two world music albums--and perfecting her innovative vocal stylings through collaborations with classical, electronic and experimental artists around the world. EQlateral is a fascinating juxtaposition of world-class classical musicianship, electronica and avante garde artistry. Expect soaring soundscapes, irresistable grooves, eerie ambience, comedic mash-ups and much more. The ensemble regularly collaborates with other musical, performance and multimedia artists and are looking forward to sharing their unique sound with audiences in Europe in 2008.

Release Date: October 15th, 2007

At long last it is here- Shulman's much awaited fourth album- "Endless Rhythms of the Beatless Heart"! After establishing themselves as a leading group in the downtempo electronica world and defying genre definitions, the Shulman duo take the next step and deliver an album, which we at Aleph Zero feel we can honestly say is going to revolutionize the electronic music world.

"Endless Rhythms of the Beatless Heart" comes after 4 years of hard work and offers a combination of electronic and acoustic music that creates something never before heard. Using their unrivaled mastery of sonic manipulation and hosting an impressive cast of highly skilled musicians, playing a vast array of musical instruments from east and west, Shulman manage to construct a musical journey the likes of you've never encountered before.

With this album Shulman once again succeed in building a musical bridge between East and West, Classic and Contemporary, Past and Future. Blending revolutionary hi-tech sounds, classical Indian, Arab & Greek music, Contemporary Jazz and much more, they weave a complex and detailed musical pattern that rests upon the world around us and adds to it an infinite depth and a magical halo.
1) Tea Time at Brian Eno's House

Here is the very first true "mixup" I did last year. Tea Time at Brian Eno's House is based on an idea of being invited to tea at Brian Eno's house and what one might hear from his in-house sound installation. The foundation of the mix is made up of long-form Eno cuts (Neroli, Thursday Afternoon, etc.) that play at very low levels throughout the mix. On top of that are Quiet American field recordings that fade in and out. On top of that are various Eno and other artist tracks mixed end to end and sometimes together. So, at any point in the mix, there are 2-5 things playing at the same time.
4) Book of Dreams

The title, Book of Dreams, is taken from a book by Jack Kerouac (as will the next several in the Lost Lake Stories collection). I tried to make this mix dream-like, having pieces of music float from one into another and fade out then back in again later as often happens with dreams. The music overall is very quiet with both ambient and acoustic elements present with a heavy reliance on strings (violin, cello). There is multi-level mixing and several field recordings, both Quiet American and a couple of my own, that whisper and play in the background like voices and distant sounds in dreams. The jpeg “score” for this mix as well as CD cover art are available for download at hydrogencafe.blogspot.com. You can download the mix there as well or here:
5) The Dharma Bums - An Ethno-Ambient Mix

This new mixup for 2007 is called The Dharma Bums. The title is taken from a book by Jack Kerouac which covers his exploration of Buddhism and the search for Truth. With this new mix I wanted to expand on the ethno-ambient feel of one of my other mixes, Tea Time at Brian Eno's House. The Dharma Bums was also greatly inspired by the amazing field recordings done by The Quiet American ( www.quietamerican.org ) and the superb ethno-ambient music of Loren Nerell ( home.earthlink.net/~lnerell/ ). My hope was to create a Pan-Asian soundworld using music inspired by, or artists from the Middle East, India and Indonesia.

This is the most complex, multi-level mix I have ever done and I am quite proud of the results. If you look at the music mix score (a jpeg contained in the Cover Art and Score Zip file you can download below), you will see that at any given time, there are at least two and sometimes up to seven different pieces of music or field recordings playing simultaneously. I used a total of 32 different Quiet American field recordings in the mix (on the music score, all Quiet American field recordings start with "QA"). I even made a small field recording myself. I hope you enjoy it.

I would like to dedicate this mix to The Quiet American and Loren Nerell.
6) Lonesome Traveler - An Ambient Mix

I have another ambient music mix available on my blog, The Hydrogen Cafe (hydrogencafe.blogspot.com). This is the third installment of the Lost Lake Stories cycle. This mixup was inspired by the movie Paris, Texas featuring an awesome soundtrack score by Ry Cooder. The movie opens with a man walking alone in the desert with nothing but the wind and sun for company. I took this image and decided to create my own soundtrack of a solitary lonesome man traveling in an empty quiet western landscape through deserts and small backwater towns…towns that whisper instead of shout. Keeping with the literary theme of the previous two mixes, the title comes from a book by Jack Kerouac, Lonesome Traveler, about his hobo-like wanderings through 1950’s America and Mexico. The mix has a decidedly twangy western feel to compliment Ry Cooder’s amazing slide guitar while keeping a slow, quiet ambient progression. The jpeg “score” for this mix is included in the Cover Art and Score Zip file. I hope you enjoy this new mixup.
Crazy about Thievery Corporation in general. Of course, the usuals--- Esthero, Massive Attack, Portishead, Supreme Beings Of Leisure. But none of them (except Esthero) has the groove, for me, that T. Corp does.
Suggestions?

It is a gorgeous compilation of world music ranging from ambient to downtempo to chill out, to mild world beat dance...I love it. Very diverse and beautiful!

It's produced by Jim Wilson, and has vocals by Tina Malia, Sita Jameison, Nubia Teixeira, Jai Uttal and more.

I took this from the inside CD cover:

"In this latest incarnation of the Tulku series we are graced with new voices and music from South Africa, Bangladesh, Morocco, Brazil and Europe. Our endevour is based on a shared vision of bringing together cultures and musical traditions from around the world into a new form."

Samples are in .wav format.

Downtempo (IMO) is trickier to beat-match than house...and many DJs don't even bother. The tracks are often very "songlike" in nature...meaning they carry themself quite independently, and mixing between them is akin to cutting back and forth (hopefully with interesting transition points/flourishes) between hip-hop tracks. House/breaks/techno tends at least share more uniformity with the prominence of driving beats, and therefore beat-matching is easier, and very necessary - since 1) you don't want folks to stumble while dancing and 2) it's very obvious when the beats aren't matched.

All that said, it's quite impressive when someone DOES throw in some beat-matching when playing downtempo. I have some example mixes of people doing it very well. And I personally strive to do it more. ...easiest way to start is to figure out the actual BPM's of your records (there are web-counters where you click your mouse to the beat that will tell you) and arrange them accordingly.

Well here it is, my first mix. Strictly glitch hop, cuz that’s how I live. These are some of my favorite songs. I’ll tell you straight up that it’s not the most technical mix ever, in fact if you listen close you can hear me fuck up a few times, a couple times the beats get a little off, and you can hear me touch the platter and other stuff like that, but like I said this is my first mix. Any feedback would be great. (especially the negative, cuz it helps me grow) I really respect all of your opinions, and I’m curious what you think, not just of the mixing but also of the tracks. When I get some time I’d like to record the mix again, add a few more tracks, and clean it up a bit, but this is where it sits right now. Enjoy?

Aleph Zero is proud to present... A New Omnimotion Album!!!

After four years of recording, producing and composing new music in his Ambium Studio based in Stockholm, Sweden, Omnimotion is finally back with a second album. Utilizing inspirations and knowledge he picked up along his very diverse musical path, Stefan has created Dream Wide Awake. The album contains the best musical gems that were carefully chosen from the music that accumulated in this four year period. It is a beautifully mellow yet optimistic album, with a strong acoustic presence. Dream Wide Awake is an incredibly diverse album. It features eight different vocalists- from a rapper to an opera singer- and many guest musicians with an array of instruments including the violin, accordion, guitar, drums, harp & flute. The outcome hovers between the electronic and the acoustic, the hypnotic and the melodic, between abstract ambient and mellow songs, between dubby songs and IDM glitches. Omnimotion weaves and paints here an emotional musical journey that must not be missed and will leave you dreaming wide awake.

I would also like to invite you to join me for a great night of moody, atmospheric acoustic music at the Red Vic. I'll be playing a 45 minute set with a couple of really great musicians, Eric Vogler on Guitar/Bass, and John Rybak on Guitar. You can hear my music at www.myspace.com/rachelmargaretmusic. I am also joined by two other bands that evening, Adam Balbo, and Davis Jones.

Sky here inviting you to come join me to celebrate my new CD - Mortal Shock.

This show will consist of a three band line up, a digital fashion & surreal art show.
Here are the details. I hope you will come out and join me and help support all our hard work over the past 5 months.

HIPNAUTICA - MORTAL SHOCK CD RELEASE PARTY
in conjunction with a FASHION AND SURREAL ART SHOW

October Friday the 13th
doors: 9:30 cover: $5
where: Elysium (7th and Red River - Austin TX) - ages: 21+

The night will start with a GOTH / ALT / EBM / DARK TRANCE Fashion & Surreal Art Show backed by solid dark wave / gothic / industrial tracks by a popular local DJ. The fashion show will include photos from various models and photographers all across the country. The surreal art show will include the work of Frank Suchomel who's beautiful work is featured on the official flyer for this event (thx Frank). Hopefully a friend of mine named BHagan (TBA) who did the comic book art for Blade as well as several works for Majick the Gathering and Doungeons and Dragons.

The first band of the evening will start around 10:00
HOLOCAUST HUMANITY (http://www.myspace.com/theholocausthumanity ). This hard hitting electronic based duo originally out of Dallas sounds like 242 / Front Line Assembly but original and locally based out of Austin now and hell of a performance worth seeing. If you are big into Industrial - this is a band to take note of. They will be featuring thier own visualizations in tight sync with thier entire set.

The second band and technically the headliner will start around 11:00
HIPNAUTICA (http://www.MySpace.com/HipnauticaMusic) - hipnautica ranges in style from Electronica/EBM/Synth Pop to Dark Wave/Industrial and with Gothic undertones. Hipnautica will be performing thier new CD Mortal Shock live with new singers, dancers, and VJ style visualizations - this will not be a show to miss. Hipnautica as many of you know is typically a solo electronics act based in Austin Texas and lead by Sky however for this special CD Release Party we will have rare performance featuring two new singers Predictus de Mortume and Pixie, live instrumentation by Inca of Spagirus... and special surprise guest from a popular industrial band live on Bass Guiitar. Also we will be showcasing new visualizations on a larger screen then ever and a special guest performance by dancer TinkerHell. This new album has been 5 months in the making so I invite you to come out to show your support. It's not easy being independent so come out and help support the local live electronic music scene.

The third band subNATURAL will go on at around 12:00
great friends of mine, massive supporters of the downtown music scene and powerful hard hitting musicians that will rock the house. subNatural (http://www.myspace.com/subnatural) will wrap up the evening. This four piece band does a great cover of Peter Murphy's called Undone. Mostly though they are all original and quite the showmen.

MORTAL SHOCK CDs Available at the show for only $8.00 normally $10.

If you are a model, photographer (novice or professional) and would like to showcase your Gothic / Alternative / Industrial / EBM / Dark Trance style we have an open call for all that want to contribute to our Digital Fashion show. This will be an easy way to showcase your work or style to other like minded fashionistas. Simply contact Sky at Hipnautica.org <- make this a standard email address.

Hey everyone,

My name is Mike Jedlicka, and I help to run Optic Echo Records. We're a new label that focuses on the mix of downtempo, ambient, experimental, and IDM electronic music. We originally were Dick and Jane Records, but the lawyers of Dick and Jane books sued us over the name, making us change label names which is a pain in the all. So, to start fresh, this year we are releasing free MP3 albums by our artists to help get the word out there. There's 3 new free MP3 albums that I'm sure you all would enjoy, and I'm here to tell you a little about them. You can find all the albums here on our music page ...
http://www.opticecho.com/music

Mike Jedlicka's "Leaving Baja"
http://www.opticecho.com/mike/discogLB
Leaving Baja is Mike's debut effort for the label, and the ambient soundscapes he presents reflect both his previous surroundings in Florida as well as his current home in Portland.

Electric Blanket's "Bye Gones"
http://www.opticecho.com/byeGones
This work compiles what Geoff views as his best work and features tracks dating back to the mid-90's as well as much more recent efforts. Most of the songs are solo compositions, but a few tracks feature friends not forgotten but no longer present in his daily life in Austin.

Justin Brown's "The Lost Chord"
http://www.opticecho.com/lostChord
This album is the result of numerous years of music experimentation and appreciation. He has gone from playing guitar and layering on a 4-track to computer synthesized compositions, and the technology has in our opinion been a benefit to his results.

Continue to check back for new albums and updates to our label, and I hope you enjoy the music. Best ...
